Located at the base of the 5th highest mountain in the world, Makalu Base Camp offers a pleasant yet rugged trail for trekking in Nepal. The trail lies inside Makalu-Barun National Park, hence offering a rare glimpse of the Eastern Nepal’s rich biodiversity.

Makalu-Barun National Park (IUCN Category II) 1,500 km2 is the eight and the highest national park of Nepal. It was established in 1992 as eastern extension of the Sagarmatha National Park. Mount Makalu lies within the national park territory. Red Panda, Spiny Babbler, snow leopard and  red fox are  few of the animals found inside the park.

It’s a longer than usual trek starting with a short flight to the remote region of eastern Nepal. A short flight from Kathmandu will take you to Tumlingtar. The first day hike ascend up to Khandbari, and from here, the trail keeps ascending until Makalu Base Camp. You pass through the national park, therefore, you may witness some of the rare Himalayan flora and fauna, including Red Panda. A day rest at the base camp will be enough to offer you great time to take pictures or wander around. The trail will descend until Tumlingtar Airport, and you can catch a flight back to Kathmandu.

Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of the least chosen outdoor activities therefore, taking this trail will offer you hassle free trek for yourself. Makalu Barun National Park and the rare breed of Red panda are the highlights of this trek. Comparatively longer than its neighboring trail, Everest Base Camp, the trek to Makalu offers the scenic view of all the surrounding mountains, namely; Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Chamlang.

Testimonials

Annapurna is the best place on Earth. The route and scenery are breath-taking. The way leading from Machhapuchhre to Annapurna base camp is the best.

I had fun with my friends. The guide is the best! He helped us throughout the trip. I’d suggest you to take Diamox to help prevent altitude sickness. It’s really hard to breath when you reach at the top. All in all a great experience. ~Jessica Mahut (Florida, USA)
